Cortijo El Sarmiento

Mojácar is an area we know well, but we had never seen Cortijo El Sarmiento until we stumbled upon it one day. This delightful little country hotel is tucked away up a narrow road at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera, just a ten minute drive from Mojácar.

A classic Andalucian farmhouse has been adapted to create an amazing hotel for adults only; beautiful, utterly peaceful, with comfort and good food to satisfy the most particular visitor. The white walls are crisp and clean, and decorated with dozens of geraniums to bring a touch of colour to the scene. The large swimming pool is good for some exercise or just cooling-off, and the ample terraces and lawn offer sun-bathing or comfy shade according to the desires of the moment.

There is a nice lounge, though most people will choose to sit outside under the arches. There is an honesty bar, and a dining room where breakfast is served daily and gourmet dinners are available most days.

Feeling like you need more wellness? Book yourself a two-hours-stay in the beautiful sauna followed by a relaxing massage if you want. Or any other health and beauty treatment you are looking for!

There are just seven guest rooms, offering a choice of standard double room or Superior double room (larger, and with space for an extra bed). Each room is elegantly decorated, and equipped with a king-size double bed, a safe, air-conditioning and heating. There is even a private outside seating area for each room.

The Costa Almería abounds with sandy beaches as well as some more rugged coastal scenery. Nearby Mojácar Playa has plenty of facilities but is 100% low-rise and not in any way over-developed. There are other long sandy beaches up and down the coast, some with a few shops, bars and villas and others totally virgin and waiting for your footprints.

Meals

Enjoying a great meal is one of the most delightful experiences in the world – especially when you can relish it together with a fine wine and good company. And where would there be a better opportunity than with hosts who not only love to cook but who also know wines?

Yvonne and Carsten are keen to offer you a lovely selection of culinary delights. In addition to the rich breakfast featuring scrambled eggs, cold meats, delicious home-made jams and honey, cereals and more,  three times a week, there is a tempting dinner menu or a tasting of Andalusian delicacies with matching wines from Andalusia.

On the nights when the kitchen is closed, Yvonne can offer a myriad of recommendations in local restaurants in Mojácar or Turre.

Out and About

Beaches: far too many to list, but try Mojácar Playa, Águilas, San Juan, Carboneras or Agua Amarga.
Golf: La Marina, Cortijo Grande, and several other courses
Horse-riding: There is a stables right by the beach, or visit Rancho Cabrera
Sierra Cabrera: Drive up over the spectacular sierra, reaching nearly 1000m

Albariño. The smallest room at Cortijo El Sarmiento but nevertheless a beautiful one; decorated with pure white linen. This gives the room an extra freshness and makes it cosy and modern at the same time. The room has a bathroom with shower, a big wardrobe with safe and a little terrace facing towards the patio.

Monastrell. This room faces the patio and has pink accents reflecting the colour of the Monastrell grape and its wine. The furniture is typically Andalusian with some modern hints. The bathroom offers a big walk-in shower and a hairdryer as well as the usual bathroom amenities.

Tempranillo. A big double room furnished in the traditional Andalusian way, but decorated with some bright colours. The bathroom is big and has a large walk-in shower. There is a little private terrace and in this room you will find a bundle of wine magazines to keep you up-to-date with the latest wine news.

Garnacha. The  biggest room, facing towards the patio with it's little terrace. Next to the king-size bed you will find a sitting area featuring specialties for wine lovers. The bathroom is very large and offers a bath tub, bathroom amenities, a hairdryer and plenty of  towels. This room can accommodate a third person, if required.

Pedro-Ximenez. Another spacious room on the other side of the house with a touch of Moorish style. It has its own big terrace, a large bedroom with king-size bed, an additional sitting area and a bathroom with a bath tub, bathroom amenities, a hairdryer and plenty of  towels.

The Macabeo and Verdejo garden suites are furnished with a walk-in shower in a really spacious bathroom, a comfortable king-size bed (180 x 200 cm) and a safe. Additionally there is a cosy sitting area as well as an escritoire. Moreover, every guest room has air conditioning and central heating as well as a private terrace and a private garden area with sun beds. Hairdryers and bath towels for the pool or beach are supplied.
