Finca El Azahar (formerly Finca Santa Marta) is a guesthouse set in a 19th century winery just outside Trujillo in Extremadura, which was completely renovated in 2020.

The Finca is surrounded by 8 hectares of olives, vines, cherry and fig trees, pomegranates and of course orange trees ("azahar" is Spanish for orange blossom). With just five guest suites, Finca El Azahar is an oasis of peace and exclusivity set in the heart of the countryside. The garden opens onto the vineyard, and is also home to the swimming pool. Weather permitting, breakfast and dinner are served under the pergola. Sunsets are the ideal moment to take a walk around the farm and to enjoy the courtyard patio, scented with orange blossom in spring.

There is a large living room in the old lagar, where the grapes were pressed up until 1980. Cool in summer because of its thick walls, welcoming in winter with its wood-burner stove, the design makes full use of the architectural qualities of the old house. The second lounge, in an old stable, is located between the courtyard and the large garden, with direct access to the swimming pool. This is the alternative venue for breakfast and dinner.

Breakfast is typical country Spanish, consisting of various breads and toast, homemade pastries and cakes, fresh fruit, cold meats, cheese, natural orange juice, tea or coffee. Dinner is served on request (book at least one day ahead) and provides fresh and seasonal produce in a homemade three course meal with coffee and liqueur. A vegetarian option is available of course.

Everything in the guest rooms is totally new, with the exception of some of the antique floors which are rather special. Indeed the rooms might best be described as suites, as they include a living room as well as bedroom and bathroom, one has a porch overlooking the garden and another a terrace. The family suite has two bedrooms (one with a double bed and the other with twins), a large living room and not one but two terraces.

For more than twenty years, Finca El Azahar and Finca Santa Marta have been welcoming guests who are passionate about ornithology. The strategic position on many migratory routes brings a wealth of variety. The dark night sky is an attraction for stargazers and the rich landscape of the surrounding area offers dozens of routes for hikers and cyclists. Nearby attractions include the Montfrague Nature Park, Orellana and Garcia Sola lakes and the towns of Trujillo, Cáceres, Mérida and Guadalupe.
