Torre Mozza is a hotel that takes the phrase “on the beach” to a whole new level. While half the hotel is literally on the the beach, the other half is in the sea. This fortified watchtower was built in the 16th century to watch over the ships bringing minerals from the nearby island of Elba.

Today Torre Mozza is a small exclusive hotel with 8 rooms and suites that prides itself on offering luxury in an extraordinary location on the Tuscan coast. The rugged structure of the tower provides the backdrop for a mix of modern and natural materials and antiques in a harmonious blend.

The wellness facilities include a jacuzzi, various massages and an exclusive sun terrace. In this location it’s hardly surprising that the restaurant emphasises the tastes of the sea in partnership with the Tuscany countryside. Milanese chef Kevin Luigi Fornoni describes his cuisine as “Classic Mediterranean style, with a modern and personal touch.” Breakfast at Torre Mozza is a typically generous and varied Italian buffet. Whether enjoying breakfast or dinner, the view from restaurant extends right along the Pratoranieri beach.

All the suites overlook the sea, and are named after famous sailing ships of the past, famous for their successful ventures. Just as if you were on board one of these vessels, guests can enjoy the sea breeze and the scent of the Mediterranean Sea, while admiring the crystal clear sea and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago, including Elba. Each Suite is furnished with prized historical artefacts and luxury designer furnishings, quality fabrics and top of the range comforts. They all include air-conditioning, wi-fi, a flatscreen TV with satellite channels, a safe and a minibar.

Perched right on the line where Tuscany meets the Tyrrhenian Sea, it may be hard to tear yourself away from the water and the beach. But this is the land of the ancient Etruscans so there is history in plenty to be explored. It’s also a great base to explore the Renaissance cities such as Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca, or the hills, vineyards and villages that make Tuscany the beautiful region that it is.
