Since Roman times the Great North Road has been the main highway from London to Scotland. When it became a coaching route in the 1700s, The Bell Inn in Stilton was built as one of the many coaching inns providing refreshment, accommodation and stabling. Today it still provides food, drink and accommodation to travellers, although no longer stabling.

The modern refurbishment of The Bell Inn has sympathetically retained the features of centuries within a comfortable 21st century context.

The restaurant and bar reflect the history of the inn with exposed dark oak beams, honey-coloured local stone walls and open fireplaces. Meals run from breakfast, via lunch, afternoon tea, to dinner and supper, seved in either the formal restaurant or the relaxed bar. There is also a coffee shop and deli where a selection of world-famous Stilton cheeses are available.

All the bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom, Freeview television, coffee & tea making facilities, complimentary bottled mineral water, and free WiFi access. There are double rooms, twin rooms and a single. There's an accessible double room with an en-suite wetroom, and a family room with both a double and a single bed. The Superior rooms are extra large with large king-size beds and best of all is the Deluxe, with an exotic four-poster bed.

The Bell Inn sits right alongside the Great North Road as it has always done, but the A1 swerves around the village leaving Stilton almost as tranquil as it has always been.
