The tiny village of Beesands takes us back to a slower, gentler age, yet the Cricket Inn brings us the best of modern hospitality. This small pub-hotel sits right on the beach at Beesands, with views straight out to sea. Naturally the decor has a nautical theme, in the New England style, so the cricket references go no further than the names of the guest rooms.

The Cricket Inn has built an enviable reputation as one of the best foodie pubs in South Devon. Situated in the idyllic South Hams, the South-West coast path passes right by the door. The award-winning restaurant (with an AA rosette) has sliding doors which open in the summer and the outside seating means you can dine alfresco-style overlooking the sea, sipping the local ales or your other favourite tipple. Beesands has a rich heritage as a fishing village and is still a base for crab and lobster fishing, so it’s hardly surprising that seafood features highly in the Cricket Inn restaurant.

Designed in a New England style and awarded 4 gold stars by the AA, The Cricket Inn boasts seven bedrooms, five with the unrivalled views of Start Bay just yards from their windows. Each room offers en-suite facilities with walk-in showers, flatscreen TV’s, complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee facilities and beautiful nautical touches in the decoration. The kingsize beds have pocket sprung mattresses, 100 % cotton sheets and sumptuous feather and down duvets. Free WiFi is available, though due to the rural location the service can be intermittent.

The South Hams are a wonderful holiday location at any time of year. To the west there are Salcombe, Hope Cove and Burgh Island, while to the east lies Slapton Sands and Dartmouth. Inland, it’s not far to the edge of Dartmoor, taking in Kingsbridge, Totnes and Dartington on the way.
