Description
La Casona de Yaiza was built around 1825 as the summer home of a wealthy landowner. More recently it became the focus of a small group of artists and hotel professionals who have turned it into a hotel, restaurant and art-gallery. Naturally, the artists have created an interior worthy of their talents, while the wonderful views and surroundings are entirely the result of nature. The hotel is located in the beautiful Fenauso valley, with the Timanfaya national park on one side and the Papagayo beaches on the other.
The interior of the hotel recreates the art of the Italian Renaissance and the Spanish artists' belonging to the roman School. By placing a varied range of decorative works for the guests' pleasure artist German Carregalo pays homage to the century in which the house was originally constructed. Beds, canopies, wardrobes, lights and paintings, together with the works of art decorating the ceilings of the upper floor rooms, and all of the furniture which graces the hotel makes up a harmonious collection that is in contrast with both traditional Canary architecture and the volcanic wilderness all around.
The hotel has 8 beautiful rooms including 3 suites, large and comfortable, and each named after one of the little places around the Fenauso valley that can be seen from the windows of the hotel. Several rooms benefit from private terraces too, and of course they all have the usual amenities that you would expect in a hotel of this quality.
Outdoors, there is a garden and terrace, a swimming pool and a jacuzzi hot-tub. Right beneath the house are ancient stone vaults (once used for water storage) that have been renovated for use as Casona de Yaiza’s own permanent art gallery.
Meals
The traditional "Lagar" restaurant housed a wine press until recently, squeezing the juice from locally grown grapes. Now it is the setting for fine dining, under the supervision of Chef Cristina. She offers a huge range of Mediterranean, Canarian and International cuisine, as well as the best of Iberian "embutidos" and tapas. Most evenings of the year, it is also possible to dine on the outside terrace.
Breakfast is a comprehensive buffet, as well as items cooked on request.
Please note that the restaurant is closed 10 May until 9 July, only breakfast is served.
Out and About
Cycling. The owner of the hotel is a keen cyclist who will suggest suitable routes for mountain bikes or road bikes. He will act as your guide if you wish.

Beaches. The beautiful and peaceful beaches at Papagayo are just a few kilometres away.

Timanfaya National Park
The Green Lake at El Golfo takes the form of a crescent, resting against the side of a former volcanic crater. It's distinctive colour comes from the unique shellfish called Clicos that live there in abundance.
The whole island of Lanzarote has been designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, international recognition of the importance of both the natural and man-made features that make the island unique.

Double Room
All rooms are unique in design and decorated to a high standard. Rooms are spread over 2 floors and either overlook or lead onto a stone-flagged courtyard or the cacti-studded gardens.
Double rooms have either a double bed or twin beds and an en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower (some also have a free-standing bath tub).
Facilities include flatscreen TV, safe, central heating, hair dryer, bathrobes and complimentary toiletries.

Double Room with Terrace or Balcony
These rooms are brand new, very spacious and decorated in a rustic style with some lovely artistic touches. They each have a double bed (or twin) and an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower. Every room has a private terrace or balcony complete with outdoor furniture.
Facilities include flatscreen TV, safe, central heating, hair dryer, bathrobes and complimentary toiletries.

Suite
The Suite is the largest room and has twin beds, a sitting area, ensuite bathroom with a shower and private terrace.

| If you want a busy, lively and sociable venue for your holiday then this is not the place for you- head to a coastal resort! A very special Little hotel on the edge of a very unspoilt little village.The photos do not do it justice. We were so surprised by the lack of people everywhere. For Easter we expected crowds and lots of celebration but it was so quiet. The hotel was also quiet even though it was full. The quietness also stretched to the staff who vanished after breakfast and werent seen till the evening.In that respect it is more like a guest house as you are left very much to your own devices - There is no help with trip planning unless you manage to catch Hosei as he is flitting between hotels. This did not bother us at all as we were happy to go and explore without help. For that a car is therefore pretty essential.The gallery is more of a collection of one persons work set in a cavernous downstairs space similar to Ceasar Manrique's wonderful volcanic interiors. Unfortunately we were unable to use the pool as it was freezing- that would have been a huge bonus in our opinion, a little solar heating would have just brought the temperature enough to make it bearable as the outside temperature was a beautuful balmy average of 20 degrees. The other guests were all very friendly and there was always availability in the restaurant though I imagine that is not always the case, The food menu stayed the same and apparently doesnt change so we were forced to try other venues as we got to know the menu off by heart. (Dont bother with L'Era, beautiful venue but I wish I had cooked my own supper!) The service is very Manyana everywhere, Dont expect to be served immediately. A 10 minute wait is average to have you gasping for a drink of anything that is fast! but the food at Casona de Yaiza is better than average and we loved variations of the pica (tapas?) which kept us returning. Our rooms were spacious if a little cold in the evenings- a rug by the beds in winter might be an idea since the floors are all tiled. Each room is quirky which makes it an interesting place to stay. We were in downstairs rooms which do have a bit of a noise problem since all floors above ground level are wooden, every footstep is heard both going up the stairs(which were outside my room) or from the bedroom above which can be very noisy with shoes on(especially if your feet are cold)- Maybe a rug there would help too! On the whole I wouldn't hesitate to visit again and would highly reccomend the Casona. A fabulous mid winter sunshine destination. |

| First let me say how much we enjoyed our stay. The hotel is charming and unique in its artistic and decorative finishes. On our arrival the owner welcomed us and, as they were not full, offered to upgrade us to a Junior Suite, without which our stay might not have been quite as enjoyable. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed on the day of our arrival as well as the following lunchtime. It was also closed without notice on the Sunday lunchtime. Other than breakfast time and when the restaurant is open, the hotel is not staffed, which seemed like most of the time we were there. This means there is no chance to get even a drink or refreshment. There are no facilities for hot or cold drinks in the rooms which we would have expected at a hotel of this quality. Maybe some sort of honesty bar/communal facility to make a hot drink and possibly an ice machine would be appropriate, for the comfort of their guests, if they are not prepared to have staff available. We were also a little disappointed at the standard of food and lack of atmosphere in the restaurant compared with our previous visit 5 years ago, which prompted us to recommend it to a number of friends, some of whom stayed there shortly after and enjoyed it. We are, perhaps, not now so inclined. We do hope that by opening their other hotel Casa Hilario, they are not undermining what was a superb hotel and restaurant. |
| We enjoyed staying at Casona de Yaiza although a very short 1 night stay. The Junior Suite was very attractive, especially the enormous bathroom. Very unusual style, some minor details which often overlooked in hotels, lighting a little feeble for example but overall very quiet and comfortable. The breakfast was satisfactory with fruit, smoked salmon, cold meats and various breads so nothing to complain about Pool area quiet. Restaurant offered a good standard of food. Certainly interested in your selection of hotels in Spain and Canary Islands for future hols. |
| Just to let you know that our Christmas holiday in La Casona de Yaiza, Lanzarote, was lovely. The only negatives was our room being the smallest room in the hotel, and frankly a bit tight with suitcases and moving around with two of us getting dressed. It was also over the washingmachines which the cleaner insisted on setting on spin at 7am in the morning. The other situation was of course the rest of the guests being German, therefore getting up at 7am to eat all the breakfasts!! before anyone else gets in (we got in at 8.30, not that late), and there is no on duty staff to replenish the hot water or coffee. These were our only problems and we did talk to Jose about the washing machines. The hotel is beautiful, with all the hand painted ceilings, wardrobes and other stuff, all with Cherubs, greek goddess statures, camio, sort of style. The food was lovely, the Christmas dinner was excellent. It is a really well maintained property. All in all very nice and a lovely time. |
